Sustainable Coffee
Sustainability
Sustainability is the key and continuous element for our coffee business. It is not just about the ever-changing environments surrounding us, we need also to consider the influence of our actions for the future. We consider sustainability in each of our decision making and planning processes.
What does sustainable coffee mean?
Sustainable coffee production can be achieved by implementing practices and operating protocols such as enhancing crop-management and practices for the use of water, using pheromone boxes to ward away insects in lieu of pesticides, composting coffee bean waste as fertilizer, using coffee hulls as alternative fuels instead of cutting down eucalyptus trees, shade-growing, and reforestation.
We are more than sustainable…
Our coffee bags are made of recyclable PE/EVOH, a type of material which are 100% recyclable and more environmentally protective than any normal aluminum bags.
While labels such as Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance certification are one way to give consumer assurance that coffee is being sourced responsibly, we consider direct trade to be in our producer’s best interest.
What is direct trade? It is a method than an organisation - adopting direct trading allows roasters (us) to buy directly from farmers who grow coffee beans. We switched from purely importing to investing in a long-term relationship with our producers back in 2018 and since then we have been able to minimize bean defects to a minimum and also to give a lasting impact to the coffee beans producing countries.
A journey to a better future
A path to impact
The recent release of the IPCC report on global climate change serves as a wake-up call to all human beings in the world. We are living in a world that is ever changing under the direct influence of humans.
As with most organisations, we are seen to have attributed to that blames and causes. We’re upfront, we’re not perfect, we’ve got a long way to go, there’s always more to do. But we’re on a journey and there is hope, we can all make a difference but we need to take action now as individuals and businesses alike. We have the power to reverse the path we’re on.
We must act to take the need in advocating for the change. As part of our commitments and as an organisation within the coffee industry, we set big goals to achieve by 2025: 100% of our packaging will be recyclable or compostable; we will attain a B Corp score of 100+ (currently sitting at 89.9); and excitingly we’ve already achieved our 1% for the Planet membership goal.
